In our Education role, we present unbiased, nonpartisan information to facilitate informed and active participation in government.
The League brings special qualities to educating and advocating on sustainable communities. The public and government officials respect the League's viewpoint. To review the League's positions, use the Positions / Indicators Grids (from the 1998 Resource Kit). The concept of sustainability originates with recognition of the finite resources of the earth; that, as resilient as nature has appeared to be, life on earth cannot be sustained at current rates of human consumption and abuse of the earth's resources. That is still the "bottom line" of programs to achieve sustainability: preservation and restoration of the earth's resources. However, the issue becomes even more complex with the necessary addition
of social and political considerations in designing strategies for achieving
sustainability and sustainable communities. The League has long supported
policies of social and economic equity as well as environmental protection,
and with this broad experience is a leader in democratic sustainable
development.
