Marks Bill of Rights Day, Celebrating Freedom
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec. 15 -- Today, December 15, is national Bill of Rights Day, a day to remember the core tenets of our democracy. At a time when we are promoting democracy to others, it is appropriate to remind ourselves of the words of the first ten amendments to the Constitution.
"Indeed, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights taken together may have had a greater impact around the world than any subsequent national action," said LWVC President Jacqueline Jacobberger. "They made clear that every human being matters and every individual should have the opportunity to follow his or her dreams. Our founding documents also made clear that freedom requires rules, and government requires constraints."
The League of Women Voters of California urges all citizens to remember the universality of our American source of freedom on this and every day.
