Estate Tax - Your Other Tax DeadlineIt comes as no surprise to Leaguers that one of the most tax efficient ways to make charitable gifts, including gifts to the League of Women Voters of California Education Fund, is by will or trust. Taxation is by its very nature a political issue, and lowering taxes always seems to find its way onto the national political agenda. However, taxation at death--the so-called death or estate tax--has a smaller constituency and generally does not find its way to this agenda.
Increasingly, people of means are reviewing the impact of these taxes, especially income taxes on qualified retirement plans, on what they leave behind. The charitable option is an important planning strategy that works to increase the after-tax value of assets for heirs as well as for the League. Giving to different levels of the League is an investment in the underlying structure that sustains the quality of our organizational programs. Consider your options in avoiding or reducing multiple taxes and contact LWVC Development Manager Diane Park, 916-442-3236, for an illustrated, individualized plan. For members who may ned additional advice, the League is fortunate to have the assistance of Pamela Gray, a League member and distinguished attorney with the law firm of O'Melveny and Myers. Thank you for your commitment to create a legacy for the future.
