SUMMER 1999

Convention Decisions on Program Issues for Emphasis

By Patsy White, Executive VP LWVC State Board-1997 - 1999

Delegates to the LWVC Convention '99 adopted an ambitious program agenda for 1999-2001. They reaffirmed all of our existing program positions in the areas of Government, Natural Resources and Social Policy and adopted the new Juvenile Justice/Dependency position; a revised Initiative and Referendum position; and a Sustainable Communities Action Policy. Details will be included in the 1999-2001 Positions Folder when the new edition comes out in the fall.

Delegates also adopted three issues for Emphasis: The recommended issue, Sustainability- education and action; as well as a non-recommended issue-Education-education and action. The delegates also voted to take on a new study should funding become available. That study will be Elections Systems. The delegates voted to study various Election Systems world wide to reach a consensus on what the Leagues feel is the best system. This study will go forward if there is funding available to produce a comprehensive study for the next two years.
