Citizen Educationby Ellen Taylor, LWVC Director of Citizen EducationI hope to be able to draw on the skills and ideas of Leaguers all over the state to make California's Citizen Education portfolio unique, and to be really what the local leagues in CA want it to become. I envision a two or three part strategy of: ( 1 ) producing position papers ("White Papers") on topics which some LLs have studied to share that information with other LLs; ( 2 ) organizing community forums on topics of interest - i.e.: White Papers, our adopted Issues for Emphasis, past studies which are pertinent to today, Gun Control, in light of Littleton, etc. and all the action on Gun Control in Congress now, the Census (we have a position, but little has been done on it, yet the way the count is taken is so important to qualify municipalities for future federal funds, seats in Congress, etc.), Voting Systems to begin our education on Election Systems, or perhaps Initiative & Referendum, utilizing our new study and updated position. The possibilities are endless. I also need to hear from LLs as to what you would like to have information on. These would not be lobbying forums or papers. I hope to disseminate information which presents both sides, pros/cons in traditional League manner. I would like your suggestions and your input. I also need volunteers to work on the drafting and organizing of the papers and forums.
